People with Prediabetes Have 50% Higher Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke

An estimated 79 million Americans have prediabetes, meaning they have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

What can you do if your sugar levels are high? Weight, exercise and food are the key factors. Try losing 7% of your body weight, exercising 30 minutes a day, five days a week, and having a healthier diet with limited carbohydrates.

If you’re over age 40 and have any diabetes risk factors (overweight, family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, are inactive), you should get a blood test to determine your blood glucose level.

Call and make an appointment at HOPES to get your blood glucose level checked if you think you may be at-risk. If you receive treatment early on and can lower and maintain your glucose levels, you may not develop type 2 diabetes, and your risk of stroke, heart disease and high blood pressure will be lowered.
