NATIONAL YOUTH HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY 2024: Promoting Awareness and Support on April 10

April 10, 2024 is National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. HOPES provides wrap around services to our youth population who have an HIV diagnoses

At Northern Nevada HOPES, we’re committed to providing comprehensive services for young individuals diagnosed with HIV.

Youth, defined as those aged 13-24, are a significant demographic affected by HIV/AIDS. In 2020, this age group comprised 20% of all new HIV diagnoses in the United States. Despite efforts to promote safe practices, condom use among sexually active students has seen a decline, dropping from 60% in 2011 to 52% in 2021. However, it’s worth noting that fewer students are engaging in sexual activity overall.

Testing remains a pivotal step in HIV prevention, yet only a mere 6% of high school students have ever been tested for HIV. To address this gap, we encourage individuals to seek information about Adolescent HIV/AIDS clinical trials through resources like The Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). At HOPES, we encourage youth participating in sexual activities to visit Change Point for testing and resources to reduce their chances of getting HIV.

It’s not just about diagnosis and treatment; it’s about ensuring that young people living with HIV have access to proper care and support. According to the CDC, young people living with HIV are the least likely to be retained in care and have a suppressed viral load. At Northern Nevada HOPES, we strive to empower youth with honest and inclusive information, equipping them with the tools they need to make informed decisions about their health.

For those seeking more resources and information about National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD), organizations like Advocates for Youth and the CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) offer valuable insights and support.

Let’s work together to raise awareness, promote testing, and support our young community in staying healthy and informed. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
